| Beautiful Minds: Stephen Wiltshire |
 |
Stephen Wiltshire from London is a star among
savants. Stephen is autistic. He did not
speak his first words "pencil" and "paper"
until he was 5. Yet, when he was 11 he drew a
perfect aerial view of London after only one
helicopter ride. For this film we're testing
the "Living camera" in Rome. (ColourField

One of Stephen's extraordinary abilities is
to memorize landscapes up to the highest
detail. During this flight he had a thorough
look at the view of the Japanese capital from
the helicopter including thousands of
buildings, towers, high-ways, cars, buses,
even down to intricate details of trees and
windows. Following the 30 minutes ride
Stephen seemed to be very excited and ready
for the challenge. Tags : stephen wiltshire tokyo panorama memory drawing autistic savant |

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located
in the English county of Wiltshire, about 3.2
kilometres (2.0 mi) west of Amesbury and 13
kilometres (8.1 mi) north of Salisbury. One
of the most famous prehistoric sites in the
world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks
surrounding a circular setting of large
standing stones. Archaeologists believe that
the iconic stone monument was erected around
2500 BC, however this was not the first stone
structure on the site
The surrounding circular earth bank and
ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of
the monument, have been dated to about 3100
BC. The site and its surroundings were added
to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites
in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury henge
monument, and it is also a legally protected
Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge itself
is owned by the Crown and managed by English
Heritage while the surrounding land is owned
by the National Trust.
New archaeological evidence found by the
Stonehenge Riverside Project indicates that
Stonehenge served as a burial ground from its
earliest beginnings
The dating of cremated remains found that
burials took place as early as 3000 B.C, when
the first ditches were being built around the
monument. Burials continued at Stonehenge for
at least another 500 years when the giant
stones which mark the landmark were put up.
According to Professor Mike Parker Pearson,
head of Stonehenge Riverside Project
Stonehenge was a place of burial from its
beginning to its zenith in the mid third
millennium B.C. The cremation burial dating
to Stonehenge's sarsen stones phase is likely
just one of many from this later period of
the monument's use and demonstrates that it
was still very much a domain of the dead.

| Wiltshire Police Helicopter |
 |
The Wiltshire police air support unit G-WPAS
is a McDonnell Douglas MD-902 Explorer, which
has no tail rotor, instead it has a rotatable
vent which expels hot air from the engines.
Shown here lifting off from the helipad at
Salisbury District Hospital, the pilot then
does a nice "handbrake turn" followed by
flying backwards before departing. Show-off!
Edit: I now know it's a standard take off,
and he's not showing off, he's being nice and
safe. I don't have time to keep up with
everybody telling me this, so I've closed the
comments off. Tags : wiltshire police helicopter g-wpas |

| Driving through Wiltshire and listening to Fats Domino |
 |
Fats Domino is back, by popular request! This
is a film of driving through villages, woods
and farmland on a few stretches of the A36 in
Wiltshire, England, from just outside
Salisbury to the roundabout at the start of
the Warminster bypass. Filmed on Easter Day
2007. Note the 'ten-to-two' position of hands
on the steering wheel! But there's no fancy
driving here - it's all legal, keeping more
or less to the speed limits. And anyone from
the US might (or might not) be interested to
see how smoothly traffic can flow around a
roundabout junction. This film has absolutely
no connection whatsoever with Harry Potter,
Paris Hilton, nor Angelina Whatsisname.
