"The Sims" designer Will Wright demonstrates
the character-creation phase from his latest

musician Brian Eno.

Will Wright and Brian Eno on "Playing with
Time."
In a dazzling duet Will Wright and Brian Eno
give an intense clinic on the joys and
techniques of "generative" creation.
Back in the 1970s both speakers got hooked by
cellular automata such as Conway's "Game of
Life," where just a few simple rules could
unleash profoundly unpredictable and
infinitely varied dynamic patterns. Cellular
automata were the secret ingredient of
Wright's genre-busting computer game
"SimCity" in 1989. Eno was additionally
inspired by Steve Reich's "It's Gonna Rain,"
in which two identical 1.8 second tape loops
beat against each other out of phase for a
riveting 20 minutes. That idea led to Eno's
"Music for Airports" (1978), and the genre he
named "ambient music" was born.
The Long Now Foundation was established in
01996* to develop the Clock and Library
projects, as well as to become the seed of a
very long term cultural institution. The Long
Now Foundation hopes to provide counterpoint
to today's "faster/cheaper" mind set and
promote "slower/better" thinking. We hope to
creatively foster responsibility in the

| Will Wright And Spore At The San Franciso Apple Store |
 |
(NOTE: If you wish to have a taste of what
happened that night, watch the video. If you
wish to find more info from the event,
COMPLETELY disregard this video and keep
searching...)
Here's the first 7-so minutes of a rare
public appearance of Will Wright and the
upcoming game Spore, releasing into the wild
in September.
Note that it is a bit shakey as it was taken
from a small Sony Cybershot, and that the
hour-long presentation is cut off after the
seven-minute mark due to the fact that
there's apparently no video recording in the
store, so here's the surviving footage of the
fun presentation.
It was truly a fun time seeing Will show off
his brainchild. It's really one of those
moments when you just had to be there.
(and believe me, it gets A LOT more
interesting after i had to stop my
videotaping)
This was taken a little after 7PM on Friday
the 21st of June at the downtown San
Francisco Apple Store location.
For more about Spore, including the
Sporepedia, Spore Creature Creator, or try
out a bit of Spore with the Spore Creature
Creator Trial Software, and much much more,
see
http://www.spore.com/
And be sure to look out for more info at the
E3 Expo!
Much thanks to Will Wright, the Maxis team,
EA, and the San Francisco Apple Store for
holding such a great, fun presentation to
stir up the buzz even more!
( NOTES: )
(slightly better viewed in high quality)
(this video is annotated and includes some
additional info, things that you may not
otherwise see even in high quality, and other
things just for fun. you know, pop-up video
kind of stuff with youtube's annotations...)
(a completely captioned experience may be on
the way if many ask for it if you can't hear
it all or not sure what he said in one
part...)
And for the hell of it, here's My Spore Page:
