| WCVB-TV "The Other Side of the Wall" 1977 |
 |
Is local television news mostly news or
mostly style? That was the question posed in
this 1977 WCVB-TV/Boston public affairs
program.
If journalists of the 1970s were concerned
about style overshadowing substance, what
would they think about the state of local TV
news today?
This report is also interesting for the
vintage technology that it displays: Ampex
quadruplex VTRs, Norelco PC-100 cameras, ITC
audio cartridge machines, a Vital switcher,
the Chyron II and film chains.

| 1977 WCVB-TV "Good Day!" |
 |
There used to be this thing called local
television ...
"Good Day!" was a 90-minute morning program
that was produced by WCVB-TV/Channel 5 in
Boston between 1973 and '91. The show served
as inspiration for ABC-TV's "Good Morning,
America!"
The show's vocal theme is heard in the first
portion of this clip. It is followed by
excerpts of the 1,000th episode that was
broadcast on July 29, 1977.

| WCVB-TV news opens 1978 |
 |
Here are a few news opens that were in use by
WCVB-TV in Boston between 1978 and the early
'80s. The music ("And You") was created by
the now-defunct Telesound. All rights are
acknowledged.
Today, Channel 5 is Boston's closest example
of a full-service local station and the
current market leader.
P.S. -- If you are watching this video from a
web browser, sorry about the poor image
quality. The material looks great in its
native H.264 codec. YouTube's old Sorenson
Spark codec is the weak link. Tags : WCVB Boston news open animation |
