| ATWT - Drunk Brian takes Luke's hand; Luke unpleasant at party; Luke makes a threat; MALE STRIPPER |
 |
In this episode, I lose much of my respect
for both Brian and Luke.
BRIAN - I was willing to dismiss the kiss as
a one time event, brought on by stress.
However, he reaches for Luke again in this
episode. And being drunk indicates to me
that his lust/love for Luke is real. When
one is drunk, one often lack the ability to
hide one's secret thoughts. While lusting
after Luke is fine, sexually harassing him is
not, especially after he made his feelings
clear. Brian's only excuse is that he was
drunk. Regardless, he owes Luke a huge
apology and a promise to never do that again.
As an aside, I give the actor a lot of
credit for taking such a difficult role.
Brian's drunken behavior with the stripper is
VERY out of character.
LUKE - Luke behaved like a jerk at the party.
He's probably pissed that he couldn't be with
the male stripper instead! :) I previously
chided Noah for abandoning Luke but now I
think it's justified. Every recent encounter
they've had has been unpleasant -- and it was
always Luke's fault. It's a continuation of
Luke's childish behavior when he went out
with Brian, Lucinda and Noah. He simply
didn't care how uncomfortable he made Lucinda
and Noah felt with his outbursts against
Brian. Being an adult means knowing when to
keep silent. Noah has made clear that he
didn't want to hear Luke bitch about Brian
yet Luke was unpleasant from the moment Noah
showed up at the party. I wouldn't want to
hang around an obsessed Luke either. He was
similarly unpleasant when Holden said that
Brian was having a good time. Why does Luke
feel the need to drag everyone else down?
Luke was actually wrong about Brian
"overcompensating" when he danced with the
stripper. Yes, studies show that many
closeted gays go overboard with hetero
behavior to hide their homosexuality. But in
this case, Brian was drunk so he didn't have
the frame of mind to pretend. In other
words, Brian's boorish fratboy hetero
behavior was part of the real Brian. We just
don't see it when he's sober. The logical
conclusion is that there is a part of Brian
who is truly hetero. But then again, are the
writers intelligent enough to take this into
account?
I previously said that if I was counseling
Nuke, I'd tell the pair to consider breaking
up. I got a lot of hate mail but the
symptoms are clear. When two people differ
on major life views, and repeatedly clash on
them without improvement, it's time to
consider splitting. In this case, it's the
speed at which Noah comes out. Luke has
repeatedly used the fact that Noah had dated
women against him -- at least 4 times. For
some reason, Luke doesn't realize that ALL
gays were closeted at one time -- including
Luke himself. Yet Luke accused Noah of
defending Brian because Noah used to be
closeted. Completely irrational and
insulting. No wonder Noah walked away. Luke
is too arrogant to admit that Noah might be
defending Brian because the evidence points
that way. Indeed, Luke accused Brian of
swindling Lucinda very early on, before there
was any kiss or evidence. When you hate
someone without cause, it's called prejudice.
Being gay, Luke should know better.
Anyway, Luke is obnoxious at 5:30, accusing
Noah of defending Brian because he too used
"to be straight." The biggest problem is
that Luke was not drunk. That means that he
can't blame alcohol; Luke really did mean to
hurt Noah. The fact that Luke refuses to
move on, and constantly uses this against
Noah during arguments shows me that the
relationship is doomed. That's because the
resentment is always in Luke's mind even when
he doesn't say it. What right does Luke have
to resent a gay man for having once been
straight? In fact, he has no right to resent
Brian for being closeted either. He can be
concerned for Lucinda's happiness, and he
certainly can be mad for the kiss, but why is
he mad about Brian being closeted? Listen to
Luke's words.
Sadly, I think this is an indication of
Nuke's eventual breakup. Jake Silbermann has
already lasted way longer than most
non-contracted actors. The fact that Jade
has returned is another clue. With Noah
gone. Luke (who has 2 more years on his
contract) will need another sidekick. Jade
was that sidekick until she left. She
fiercely defended him against a homophobic
Kevin after Luke came out. In fact, she was
his only friend and confidante.
Finally, the ultimatum that Luke gives Brian
at 10:35 is exactly what he should have said
after the kiss. Period. Luke is right, it's
none of his business whether Brian is gay.
All that nonsense of stealing the letter and
harassing Brian's ex should never have
happened. The only thing that should concern
Luke is whether Brian makes a move on him.
Even telling Lucinda is improper because she
may die next year from cancer and doesn't
need the stress. Thus far, Luke has no proof
that Brian is trying to steal money (he
signed a pre-nup), etc. So Luke should just
tell him to lay off, and that's it. Tags : atwt as the world turns luke snyder van hansis noah mayer jake silbermann gay brian holden jack brad henry carly lily vienna janet kiss |
