| Riz Khan - India's Poor - November 25 2008 - part 2 |
 |
Riz Khan continues our coverage from Mumbai.
In this show we look at the growing divide
between rich and poor in India.
India has the fastest growing number of
millionaires in the world and also has than
700 million people living on less than two
dollars a day many of whom reside in slums
or shanty towns.
Some accuse greedy developers of refusing to
build low-cost housing, because there is much
money to be made off the real estate.
Others fault the politicians for letting
things get out of hand by refusing to change
the status quo.
Still others blame the poor themselves. They
claim that the poor have a fatalistic
attitude and believe it is their destiny to
live in squalor.
In this program Riz speaks with Milind Deora,
Member of Parliament, and Gerson Da Cunha, a
member of the Action for Good Governance and
Networking in India which aims to increase
government transparency and raise awareness
of people's rights.
Riz asks, what can be done to reduce the gap
between the rich and poor in India's Cities? Tags : Riz Khan India poor slum Murli Deora Garson Da Cunha Action for Good Governance |

| Poor Whites - South Africa |
 |
June 2006
Since the end of apartheid, thousands of
white South Africans have been forced into
poverty. They blame the government's positive
discrimination policies, which favour black
employees.
Twelve years ago, Afrikaners like Betsie
Dreyer lived a privileged and cocooned life.
Now, many are dependent on charity handouts.
"We are fighting all the time to survive."
The government is determined to see the
workforce appropriately reflect the
population. It gives black people priority in
employment, sets 'black quotas' for
businesses and favours companies owned by
black people. But critics accuse the
government of neglecting its responsibility
to white citizens. As union rep Kallie Kriel
states: "It's ironic that a government that
fought racial laws is now doing exactly the
same thing." Tags : South Africa Poverty Apartheid Whites ANC Government Racism Journeyman Pictures |

| Rich Media, Poor Democracy |
 |
http://www.mediaed.org
If a key indicator of the health of a
democracy is the state of its journalism, the
United States is in deep trouble. In Rich
Media, Poor Democracy, Robert McChesney lays
the blame for this state of affairs squarely
at the doors of the corporate boardrooms of
big media, which far from delivering on their
promises of more choice and more diversity,
have organized a system characterized by a
lack of competition, homogenization of
opinion and formulaic programming.
Through numerous examples, McChesney, and
media scholar, Mark Crispin Miller,
demonstrate how journalism has been
compromised by the corporate bosses of
conglomerates such as Disney, Sony, Viacom,
News Corp, and AOL Time Warner to produce a
system of news that is high on sensationalism
and low on information. They suggest that
unless citizen activism can reclaim the
commons, this new corporate system will be
characterized by a rich media and an ever
impoverished, poor democracy. Tags : MEF Media Education Literacy Critical Mass Industry Educational Sut Jhally Robert McChesney Journalism Activism |

| Ricky Nelson Tribute: Poor Little Fool |
 |
This is a request by dfw3355. Gave me this
idea and I did it! I admit it, I really enjoy
Ricky Nelson's music a lot and glad someone
suggested me to do a tribute for him and I
did. I happen to know the lyrics to a few
songs of his such as "I'm Walkin'",
"Travelin' Man" "Hello Mary Lou" "Garden
Party" and this song too "Poor Little Fool."
This tribute is to a great man, son of Ozzie
and Harriet Nelson, brother of David Nelson
and father of actress Tracy Nelson and
musicians Gunnar and Matthew Nelson. To all
you Rick Nelson fans, enjoy!
