| First 2008 Presidential Debate: McCain & Obama on Lessons from Iraq |
 |
Wall Street hijacked the first presidential
debate Friday night between Democratic Sen.
Barack Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain,
who clashed over tax cuts, congressional
spending and President Bush's proposed $700
billion bank bailout in a forum that was
supposed to be about foreign policy.
The candidates skirmished over the war in
Iraq, with McCain sticking to his support for
Bushs troop surge last year and Obama
repeating that he opposed the U.S. invasion
all along. But the collapse of major
financial institutions this month put foreign
affairs — the stated topic of the first
debate — firmly in the background as the
men faced off at the University of
Mississippi in Oxford.
Obama sought to tie McCain to the bank
crisis, calling it a final verdict on eight
years of failed economic policies promoted by
George Bush, supported by Senator McCain. Tags : first presidential debate john mccain barack obama lessons iraq war plans fixes |

| Inside Iraq - Lessons of War - 03 Oct 08 - Part 1 |
 |
Inside Iraq asks what lessons the world has
learnt more than five years into the American
military misadventure in Iraq.
It is often said that history repeats itself.
The Vietnam war in the 1960s, which dragged
on for 14 years, is an almost direct parallel
to the invasion of Iraq.
The route to Baghdad, however, was far more
complicated.
The war split the western super powers and
the UN.
George Bush, the US president, and Tony
Blair, the former British prime minister,
were convinced that the UN's blessing was not
necessary to invade Iraq, prompting Kofi
Annan, the then secretary-general, to label
it an illegal war.
Critics charged that the biggest lesson of
the war was the deception over Saddam's
supposed weapons of mass destruction.
Our guest this week is Lord David Owen, a
former British foreign minister. Tags : Inside Iraq Jasim Al-Azzawi Lord David Owen US foreign policy Blair Bush administration mistakes lessons learned |
