| F-16 Start Up Sequence |
 |
Start up of the F-16C is simple....no
external APUs or other equipment is
necessary. One switch turns on the battery
and then another switch hits the Jet Fuel
Starter. When you see the GREEN JFS light,
unock the throttle and in less than a minute
you're up to idle speed, and the only thing
left to do is aligning the inertial
navigation and perform pre-flight checks.
BTW, the sound you hear at the beginning, its
not an APU, its the motor from the canopy.
You'll here a buzz, thats the battery, then
you'll here it spooling thru N (nancy)
stages. You'll notice he then glances over
at the fan turbine inlet temp, oil pressure,
nozzle position (NOZ) and RPM guages. After
that he glances left and as the two lights go
out on the left side panel, its all clear on
engine start. He then reaches to the right,
turns on the lights, and turns on navigation
and other nav functions. As the navs start
coming up and the ICP is lit up, you will
notice the green lettering in the box to the
RIGHT of the ICP, that is the inertial
navigation system, and as that goes thru its
checks you'll see "RDY" which means its ready
and aligned. Then the MFD's come up and the
HUD comes alive. The F-16C has a new wide
angle HUD, which provides all flight info and
weapons aiming Q's so the pilot can keep his
head out of the cockpit and on target.
Directly below the HUD you'll see the square
box, called ICP or Inegrated Control Panel,
on either side you'll see two MFD's that can
show tac, nav, weapons and other information.
When you see him hit the buttons on the MFDs
thats the pilot inputting mission parameters
from the box. For a great video on HUD
display in the F-16, visit

| US F-16 shoot down by serbian army in Bosnia 1995 |
 |
Bosnian Serb Army SA-6 surface-to-air missile
shot down a USAF F-16 near Mrkonjić Grad,
Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 2, 1995. The
American pilot, Scott O'Grady, ejected safely
and was rescued six days later, on June 8.
The 2001 film Behind Enemy Lines is loosely
based on this event.
The incident
The pilots, Scott "Zulu" O'Grady (call sign
"Basher 52", pronounced "Basher Five-Two")
and his flight lead, Capt. Robert G. "Wilbur"
Wright (call sign: "Basher 51", pronounced
"Basher Five-One"), were briefed on the
morning of June 2 about the weather and enemy
positions they could expect for their flight.
The two pilots took off without incident and
flew according to their assigned mission
parameters.
The Serbs had unexpectedly moved a missile
battery south and laid a trap for any
incoming aircraft. They switched on their
missile radars sparingly, giving the F-16
pilots little warning of their position, and
fired two SAMs toward the jets. O'Grady was
alerted by cockpit instruments that a missile
was coming, though flying in clouds, he could
not see it. The first missile exploded
between the two USAF F-16s. The second hit
O'Grady's plane in the belly. As his aircraft
broke apart from the damage of the missile
strike, O'Grady successfully ejected.
After landing, O'Grady abandoned his
parachute and moved into the woods. He lay
face down, cupping his camouflaged flight
gloves over his head and ears so he could not
be spotted in the brush. Within minutes a
teenage boy and a man wandered past; then he
saw armed men nearby. Grady evaded detection
even though the search for him continued
relentlessly during his time on the ground.
Part of this may be credited to his military
SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, and
escape) training, which taught him how to
obtain water and food, evade detection, and
avoid medical dangers like hypothermia.
The rescue
O'Grady waited to radio for help; he had been
taught that downed pilots are often captured
after calling for help too soon, giving away
their position. Finally, on June 6, he
signaled his location, using a little more of
the small reserve of his radio's battery
power each time he went on the air. The next
day, just after 2:00 AM, he spoke into the
radio. An American voice responded, and the
rescue was set in motion.
On June 8, 1995, he was rescued by United
States Marines of the 24th Marine
Expeditionary Unit based on the USS
Kearsarge.

Incident 2. lipnja 1995. nad BiH je bilo
obaranje američkog aviona F-16 nad od strane
PZO Vojske Republike Srpske u blizini
Mrkonjić Grada.
U avionima F 16C letjeli su satnik Scott W.
O'Grady, pozivni signal misije "Basher-56" i
satnik Bob Wright, pozivni signal misije
"Basher-57". Taj su petak baš njih dvojica
bili, od svih ostalih pripadnika 555.
lovačke eskadrile 31. lovačkog puka, na
borbenoj zadaći. Letjeli su na visini od
26.000 stopa i nekoliko su puta nadlijetali
područje Bihać-Banja Luka-Bosanski
Petrovac. Bili su bezbrižni, ne vjerujući
da im se išta može dogoditi imajući u vidu
poznate pozicije srpskih protuzrakoplovnih
bitnica s raketama SA-6.
rakete SA-6. Ali, ništa nije mogao učiniti.
Satnik Bob Wright u drugom F 16C vidio je
kako je eksplozija rakete presjekla avion u
dva dijela i kako je kokpit sa satnikom
O'Gradyjem neoštećen nestao u oblaku, ali
nije vidio što se dalje dogodilo. Satnik
Wright odmah je markirao poziciju rušenja
zrakoplova i obavijestio bazu, ali nije bio
siguran je li se O'Grady katapultirao iz
kokpita pogođenog aviona. Scott O'Grady,
presenećen eksplozijom rakete i u šoku,
zahvaljujući tome da su nos i kabina
zrakoplova ostali u jednom komadu, uspijeva
povući ručicu katapultiranja sjedišta; tu
"lijepu zlatnu ručku" kako je poslije sam
izjavio. Iako ošamućen i opečen po glavi i
vratu, uspješno otvara padobran i spušta se
nadlijećući glavnu cestu i gomilu srpskih
vojnika koji ga očekuju.
