Peter Cupples performs Goanna's hit Solid Rock
Peter Cupples performs a Tribute to Australian Rock Bank 'Goanna' With Solid Rock. Produced and presented by Alessandro Sorbello http://www.alessandrosorbello.com Peter Cupples http://www.pertercupples.com performed this track to a small group of friends in Brisbane Australia in October 2007. About Goanna - Goanna is an Australian folk-rock band, notable in integrating social protest with popular music. Formed by singer-songwriter Shane Howard in the late 1970s, they produced three full albums, and a very rare four song EP record. The original name of the band was "The Goanna Band", which was the name used on the EP release in 1979. However, the original name was soon shortened to simply "Goanna" by the time that the album Spirit of Place was released in the early 1980s. They were signed to WEA Australia. Goanna's début album Spirit of Place won the ARIA Best Album of the Year for 1982, with their first major hit, "Solid Rock", winning Best Single of the Year. This song touched on the displacement of aboriginal tribes by the encroaching European settlers. It became a worldwide hit, and was the first rock record to feature extensive use of an Australian didgeridoo, one of the world's oldest wood instruments. Goanna also recorded "Let the Franklin Flow", a song about the ecological damage to be caused by damming Tasmania's Franklin River for hydroelectricity, and "Sorry", a song about Australia's "stolen generation" of aborigines. Shane Howard and his bandmates, including sister Marcia Howard and friend Rose Bygrave, have all recorded solo projects in addition to their time in Goanna. The members of the group do not rule out future Goanna recordings and have never officially disbanded. The 1998 album "Spirit Returns" is reportedly a result of the group's members desire to "get together" again and make a musical statement. A special thank you to my friend Erik Johansen (Tape8) who edited Peters performance - http://www.tape8.com In October 2006, a number of Goanna's songs have been featured in the Triple M Essential 2006 Countdown of songs (which was voted and chosen by the listeners) including: Solid Rock (ranked 427 out of 2006 songs) Razors Edge (ranked 1232 out of 2006 songs) Members - (some of the performers listed are live or studio recording artists and don't "formally" make up the official band) Shane Howard Marcia Howard Rose Bygrave Mick "The Reverend" O'Connor Warrick Harwood Peter "Brolga" Coughlan Graham Davidge Robert (Robbie) Ross Joe Camilleri Ross Hannaford Judi Kenneally Ian Morrison Billy Inda Trevor Lucas Sam See Vanetta Fields Billy Payne Greg 'Kenny' Sheehan Mal Logan Joe Creighton Kerryn Tolhurst Discography Living on the Razor's Edge by The Goanna Band (4 Song EP) - released 1979 Spirit of Place - released 1982 (expanded & re-released 2003) Oceania - released 1985 Spirit Returns - released 1998 Solid Rock Lyrics by Goanna Out here nothin' changes Not in a hurry anyway You can feel the endlessness With the comin' of the light 'o day You're talkin' bout a chosen place You wanna sell it in a marketplace Well Well just a minute now You're standin' on Solid rock Standin' on sacred ground Livin' on borrowed time And the winds of change Are blowin' down the line Right down the line Well round about the dawn of time The Dreaming all began A crowd of people came Well they were lookin' for their promised land We're runnin' from the heart of darkness Searchin' for the heart of light It was their paradise Well they were standin' on Solid rock Standin' on sacred ground Livin' on borrowed time And the winds of change Were blowin' cold that night Well they were standin' on the shore one day Saw the white sails in the sun Wasn't long before they felt the sting White man, white law, white gun Don't tell me that it's justified Cause somewhere Someone lied Yeah, well someone lied Someone lied Genocide Well someone lied And now you're standin' on Solid rock Standin' on sacred ground Livin' on borrowed time And the winds of change Are blowin' down the line Solid rock Standin' on sacred ground Livin' on borrowed time And the winds of change Are blowin' down the line Solid rock Standin' on sacred ground Livin' on borrowed time And the winds of change Are blowin' down the line No!

Peter Cupples performs 'Fly me To The Moon' @ Italian Week
Peter Cupples performs for Italian Week 2008 produced by Alessandro Sorbello http://www.alessandrosorbello.com Italian Week is an initiative of the Italian Consulate in Brisbane and is the Official Italian Festival in Brisbane http://www.italianweek.com.au Peter Cupples http://www.petercupples.com from his Fly Me To The Moon album with his song You dont know me "Fly Me to the Moon" is a pop standard song written by Bart Howard in 1954. When introduced by Felicia Sanders on the cabaret circuit, it was originally titled "In Other Words". The song became popularly called "Fly Me to the Moon" from its first line, but it took a few years for the publishers to change the title officially. It was first recorded in 1954 by Kaye Ballard, and released by Decca Records as catalog number 29114. In 1956 it was recorded by Portia Nelson for her album, Let Me Love You. The same year, Johnny Mathis recorded the song, this was the first time the title "Fly Me to the Moon" appeared on a record label. The original singer of "Fly Me to the Moon", Felicia Sanders, recorded the song in 1959. It was released on Decca Records as catalog number 30937. In late 1961 Nat King Cole recorded the song for the album "Nat King Cole Sings/George Shearing Plays" and was released on Capitol Records, catalog #1675. In 1962, an instrumental version was recorded as "Fly Me to the Moon Bossa Nova" by Joe Harnell, which became the biggest chart hit version of the song, reaching #14 (#4 easy listening) on the U.S. pop singles charts. An original arrangement (by Ernie Freeman) is found in Julie London's 1963 album "The End of the World", with a different intro than usual, a jazz pizzicato instrumental break and lustrous flowing piano accompaniment. In 1964 Doris Day recorded the song for her highly acclaimed album Latin for lovers. Quincy Jones presents platinum copies of "Fly Me to the Moon" to Senator John Glenn and Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong. Frank Sinatra recorded the song on his 1964 album It Might as Well Be Swing accompanied by Count Basie. The arrangement by Quincy Jones has become the rendition by which most people recognise the song. Jones changed the time signature, which was originally 3/4 waltz-time, to 4/4 and gave it a 'swing' feel. Sinatra's recording was a hit and was played to the astronauts of Apollo 10, on their lunar mission. [1] Sinatra also performed the song with Basie on 1966's Sinatra at the Sands, and on 1994's Duets II, his final recording of "Fly Me to the Moon" and his final collaboration with Antonio Carlos Jobim. He also performed this song in 1969 TV-show "Sinatra", there he dedicated it to the Apollo astronauts "who made the impossible possible". The following year Tony Bennett recorded the song and had a minor hit with it. In subsequent years through the 2000s, he has often performed the song in concert without using any amplification or sound system. Oscar Peterson recorded the song on his album Tristeza on Piano in 1970 which sort of imitated Count Basie and his band. The track had to be deleted on the Three Originals compilation because there was not enough room for it to fit. The song also became an international best seller after Connie Francis had recorded it on September 28, 1962 in Italian and on February 25, 1963 in Neapolitan (both versions were released under the title Portami con te). A Spanish version was recorded on February 21, 1963 under the title Llévame a la luna, although this recording was also released under the title Mandame a la luna. The song is popular in Germany and has been recorded by Tom Gaebel on his album The Unknown (2003) and by Roger Cicero as "Schiess mich doch zum Mond" on his album Männersachen (2006). These weren't the first recordings by German artists, though. Already in 1965, the song had been recorded by Heidi Brühl, a German singer/actress who later went to the US to host her own Las Vegas Shows and to appear on television shows such as Marcus Welby, M. D., and Columbo. The song reached a new generation when it was used during the opening titles of Oliver Stone's 1987 film Wall Street and is included on the Tribute album of Westlife, Allow Us to Be Frank. It also appears in the closing moments and over the end titles of Clint Eastwood's 2000 film Space Cowboys.

Summer Breeze - Seals and Crofts tribute by Peter Cupples
Peter Cupples performs a cover of the Seals and Crofts Summer Breeze. Produced and presented by Alessandro Sorbello http://www.alessandrosorbello.com Peter Cupples http://www.pertercupples.com performed this track to a small group of friends in Brisbane Australia in October 2007. About Seals and Crofts Jimmy Seals and Dash Crofts are two musicians from Texas who were immensely popular in the 1970's, and still honored today for their hits Summer Breeze, Hummingbird, Diamond Girl, We May Never Pass This Way Again and Get Closer. Their unique pop/rock sound was made famous by their incredible vocal harmony, songwriting and musicianship. Their music was also distinctive for their spiritual lyrics and themes, inspired by the teachings of the Bahá'í faith. Although no true reunion is planned, Seals & Crofts recorded their first album together in over 20 years in 2004, entitled TRACES. The album features new versions of several hits from the 1970's, plus some newer tunes! S & C are in fine voice. Included are a total rearrangement of the hits, such as Get Closer (with Dash's daughter Lua and Jimmy's daughter Juliet). Some updated album cuts are added, such as Not Be Found and Euphrates. Another highlight is the previously unreleased "Change the Copper Into Gold" (inspired by the spiritual odyssey of Dorothy Baker), a mesmerizing song that ranks among Jimmy's best. A newer song also penned by Jimmy, "North Light," has been retitled and released as "Paint You." The album does not include the song "Traces," which was Jimmy's recounting of the ten Bahá'í women executed during the Iranian persecutions in the 1980's. That song was released in 1987 on a rare Bahá'í album, called Jewel In the Lotus. The album does, however, include a version of "Love Takes No Prisoners," which first appeared on Louie Shelton's cd, Hot & Spicy Seals and Crofts are Jim Seals (born James Seals, 17 October 1941, Sidney, Texas) and Dash Crofts (born Darrell Crofts, 14 August 1940, Cisco, Texas), a popular soft rock duo in the early 1970s, best-known for their hits "Summer Breeze" and "Diamond Girl." They were also the most famous Bahá'ís of 1970s in the United States. According to Billboard ratings, SUMMER BREEZE was ranked #2 among all albums charted during 1973. Number 1, a surprise in retrospect, was War's THE WORLD IS A GHETTO. An unreleased song from the SUMMER BREEZE recording sessions in July of 1972 was "Greying Eyes of Time." Pioneers - Peter Cupples
Produced and presented by Alessandro Sorbello http://www.alessandrosorbello.com Peter Cupples performs a series of songs to a small group of friends in Brisbane Australia in October 2007. A unique opportunity to hear one of Australia's best Singer/songwriters. Peter Cupples from the album bac2basix http://www.pertercupples.com Peter Cupples led the band Stylus, one of Australia's best-known acts, in the 1970s when pop/rock groups Sherbert, ACDC and Cold Chisel dominated. Stylus combined a soul and funk sound with rich harmonies. Eventually the group signed for American giant Tamla Motown, the first white group to sign for the label. Hits included "Summer Breeze" and "World Of Make Believe". During the 80s, Peter led The Peter Cupples Band which made two albums and has since maintained a significant presence in the industry. This album was recorded in early 2000 but it was shelved because Peter wasn't happy with it. Eventually, after some perspective, Peter did release it and suggests that, as an analogue recording in a digital world, it has a unique charm. Previous recordings include "The Best Of The Best" (2001) "Home Grown" (2001), "Sacred Heart"(1999), and "Changes"(1994). Living in A World Of Make Believe - Peter Cupples
Produced and presented by Alessandro Sorbello http://www.alessandrosorbello.com Peter Cupples performs a series of songs to a small group of friends in Brisbane Australia in October 2007. A unique opportunity to hear one of Australia's best Singer/songwriters in an intimate atmosphere. Peter Cupples http://www.pertercupples.com has produced numerous albums over his extensive career, a brief summary of his time with Stylus and a recount of his experience in his own words follow. Peter Cupples formed the Masons Cure which later grew into Stylus. With great hits such as "Summer Breeze", "Living in a world of make believe" Stylus were destined to move on to greater things. With the release of their next album ("For the Love of music") the band found interest in America from Motown records. It was a great honour and thrill for the band to be the first all white band with Motown, and for Peter Cupples being the lead singer and songwriter it was pretty special. Jeff really believed in Stylus and he managed to help us gain a record contract and some commercial attention. We had been playing "Summer Breeze" back in the Masons Cure stage and it became our signature tune. We often had to play the song 2 or 3 times in one show to satisfy the audience. Our version of the Seals and Croft classic became our first Top10 hit. We made our first performance on Countdown - an incredible experience for a young group of guys from the bush. We really were "Living in a world of make believe" when we went into the studio to record that track. Around this time we hooked up with the management of Glenn Wheatley and his brother Paul. Glenn worked Stylus along with his other project, a group of guys called the Little River Band. At one Music industry conference they managed to sign LRB to Capital, and Stylus to Motown. Not a bad weeks work. We followed this up with our third album, Best Kept Secret. This album was released locally on Oz Records and in the United States, under the banner of the world's most respected Soul label Motown. The Motown subsidiary, Prodigal, carried the Stylus name to the world's biggest market behind the disguise of a mask. We were pretty excited with being signed to such a prestige label but, as things turned out, we were the last act to be published on Prodigal, and the American market never found out that there were five white Aussie guys hiding behind the mask. It did, however, leave us with the legacy of a great story to tell future generations... Our fourth and final album was Part Of It All. Again this is a nice recording. With the promise of the Motown emergence still ever present in our enthusiasm, we worked hard to produce a top quality record. Unfortunately, it ended up being the finale to a great part of my life. Stylus was very different to the other bands of the time in many ways. Not only musically different, but also culturally different. We were friends and family, and remain so to this day. Our reunion concerts move the audience because there is still magic between us that time has not eroded. Our recent reunion at Capers (see current projects), proved to our loyal fans that we still have the ability to create something special when we do get together. In the same way that we came together as friends ,we parted as friends. There was no definitive rock and roll type split, no arguments over musical direction, no tensions within the band, no religious differences or bad karma... We were just all very tired from the touring. We had been on the road for 50 weeks a year for over 5 years, and it was wearing us down. Quite naturally we all started working on different projects, some still working with each other, but the band that was known as Stylus, that had been such a wonderful era in all of our lives ceased to exist. In the end it was wonderful to have been..."A part of it all"... Track Listing: 1. World Of Make Believe 2. All In The Game 3. Will This Continue 4. Just Begun 5. Summer Breeze 6. Paradise 7. I'm So In Love With You 8. I Remember 9. Where In The World 10. I'm Going Home Album Details: Released by Astor. 1975 Produced by Trevor Courtney and Stylus A special thank you to my friend Erik Johansen (Tape8) who edited Peters performance - http://www.tape8.com

In film, "Fly Me to the Moon" was used as the theme song of Oliver Stone's Wall Street (1987), under the last frames of Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys (2000) (in Sinatra's version), and was performed by Jay Mohr in Eddie Murphy's The Adventures of Pluto Nash. It is also the main song of the 1991 film "Once Around", starring Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter and Danny Aiello, who also performs a rendition during the wedding scene. Thomas Anders (of Modern Talking fame) recorded his version in 1997 on the album Live Concert. The song is also the ending theme of the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, in several remixed versions and performed by multiple people, most notably the famous Japanese seiyū Megumi Hayashibara and Yuko Miyamura (all in English). The song has been remixed again and sung by Utada Hikaru for the trailer of the first movie in the Rebuild of Evangelion series of films, You Are (Not) Alone. In episode 369 of the The Simpsons, "The Seemingly Never-Ending Story", "Fly Me to the Moon" is played during Moe and Edna's love montage, and Moe later refers to it as their song. On American Idol season 6, Top 20 contestant, Nick Pedro sang a rendition of "Fly Me To The Moon" at his audition in New York. In the series finale of 3rd Rock From the Sun, Elvis Costello sang "Fly Me to the Moon" at a farewell party the aliens threw for themselves. Versions of song by Frank Sinatra and Felicia Sanders were played simultaneously in Down With Love as Barbara (Renée Zellweger) and Zip (Ewan McGregor) got ready for their date with each other.
