Staples, Inc. NASDAQ: SPLS is the world's
largest office supply retail store chain,
with over 2,000 stores worldwide in 21
countries. The company has catalog and
delivery businesses and serves customers in
Argentina (as Officenet), Austria, Brazil (as
Officenet), Canada (via its Business Depot
division, under the brand name Staples
Business Depot), China, Denmark, France,
Germany, India, Italy, United Kingdom and the
United States. Staples, Inc. sells supplies,
office machines, promotional products,
furniture, technology and business services.
The company's first store was opened in
Brighton, Massachusetts in 1986. The company
is headquartered in Framingham,
Massachusetts. It also does business via the
Internet, through Staples.com, its website.
The L in the logo is a stylized staple.
Staples History
The idea for Staples was spawned in 1985,
while founder Thomas G. Stemberg was working
on a proposal for a different business. He
needed a ribbon for his printer, but was
unable to obtain one because his local dealer
was closed for the Independence Day holiday.
A frustration with the reliance on small
stores for critical supplies combined with
Stemberg's background in the grocery business
led to a vision for an office supply
superstore. The first store was opened in
Brighton, Massachusetts in 1986. The 500th
store was opened in Vero Beach, Florida, in
1996.
Staples Office Depot merger
On September 4, 1996, Staples and Office
Depot announced plans to merge. The Federal
Trade Commission decided that the superpower
would unfairly increase office supply prices
despite competition from OfficeMax, because
Office Max did not have stores in many of the
local markets that the merger would affect.
Staples ultimately argued that chains such as
Wal-Mart and Circuit City represented
significant competition, but this argument
did little to sway the FTC.
Staples and Dell
Staples has announced it will start selling
Dell computers, monitors, ink, toner, and
printers.
"The initial products offered at Staples will
include Inspiron 1721 and 1521 notebooks,
Inspiron 530 desktops, Dell 948 and 926
all-in-one inkjet printers, Dell 1320c laser
printer, Dell SE198WFP 19-inch widescreen
flat panel LCD monitor, and the Dell E228WFP
22-inch widescreen flat panel LCD monitor.
Additionally, Staples will offer ink and
toner for most Dell printers."

NutriSystem Nourish Diet plan is a "send you
the food" diet plan operated by NutriSystem,
Inc.(NASDAQ: NTRI) of Horsham, Pennsylvania.
The NutriSystem Diet is based on the Glycemic
Index of Carbohydrates. By combining
exercise, and frequent smaller portioned
meals, the glycemic index diet is supposed to
reduce hunger (due to a constant blood
glucose). There is some support for weight
loss and health benefits of low
glycemic-index diets in controlled scientific
studies, however, some other studies have
suggested there is no long-term benefit to
these diets. It was founded by Stacie Mullen,
a television personality, in 1991 when the
company was going to produce 20 breakfasts,
lunches, dinners, desserts, and snacks.
The company started out in 1972 selling a
liquid protein diet, which it abandoned in
1978 due to the growth of competition. It
then started selling food which was packaged
and preserved in portion controlled packages,
to take the decisions out of dining. The
company went bankrupt in the early 1990's and
closed down its weight-loss centers. It
reemerged in 1999 as an internet advertiser,
and a publicly traded company, with the meals
shipped to consumers. CEO Michael Hagen
shifted advertising to TV, using satisfied
customers in ads. Clients can call, email or
chat online with the weight loss counselors
for advice or support. The average customer
stays on the program 10 weeks. Many regain
the weight lost.
Current TV ads feature former Miami Dolphins
quarterback Dan Marino as the lead
spokesperson, also featuring other well-known
celebrities who have purportedly lost weight
using the company's products.
NutriSystem, Inc. has been helping America
get thin and healthy for the past 35 years.
Through its comprehensive weight loss
program, NutriSystem developed into a leader
in the weight loss industry, and became a
publicly traded company in October of 1999
(NASDAQ: NTRI).
In that same year, in conjunction with its
network marketing division of nationwide
consultants and direct sales, known as
NutriSystem Direct, the company launched its
innovative website — www.nutrisystem.com
— and paved the way for a new breed of
weight loss company.
Live counseling, both online and via
telephone, replaced traditional customer
visits to brick-and-mortar centers, and
created a new and extremely private way for
people to deal with oftentimes difficult
weight loss issues. Additionally, by way of
online ordering, NutriSystem could now
deliver its quality food and meal programs
directly to consumer doorsteps, providing
them with a convenient and streamlined way to
learn better eating habits and lose weight.
Clients just log-on, decide on a recommended
meal plan, order their food, and once it
arrives, they're ready to go. NutriSystem
also offers vitamins and dietary supplements
to clients, to ensure that their customers
receive proper nutrition while focusing on
weight loss.
With the addition of an exclusive contract
with the QVC network in 2001, NutriSystem
earned an even larger presence within the
weight loss industry, and now boasts superior
earnings and increased brand awareness
through this favorable affiliation.
NutriSystem now stands as a constant pillar
of support and information for those looking
to lose weight in a busy world. As an
Internet force, its wide-ranging web content,
combined with its knowledgeable and
well-trained counselors, equals a powerful
resource for all dieting consumers. And it's
available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with
no waiting for weekly meetings or worry about
expensive membership fees.
NutriSystem believes in its clients and is
there to help them, every step of the way.
Together with its growing online member
community, NutriSystem makes weight loss —
and the goal of becoming healthy and fit —
a reality for millions.

In marketing a coupon is a ticket or document
that can be exchanged for a financial
discount or rebate when purchasing a product.
Customarily, coupons are issued by
manufacturers of consumer packaged goods or
by retailers, to be used in retail stores as
a part of sales promotions. They are often
widely distributed through mail, magazines,
newspapers, the Internet, and mobile devices
such as cell phones. Internet coupons have
become popular recently, because there is no
postal cost, and the printing cost is borne
by the user (who prints the coupons) rather
than the businesses issuing them. Mobile
coupons have emerged as a new and green
alternative as no printing is required
whatsoever. Mobile coupons as a method of
coupon redemption are gaining in popularity
as more consumers utilize their mobile
devices for uses beyond voice.
Origin
In 1887, the Coca-Cola Company was
incorporated with Asa Griggs Candler as one
of the partners. He transformed Coca-Cola
from an insignificant tonic into a profitable
business by using innovative advertising
techniques. The key to this growth was
Candler's ingenious marketing including
having the company's employees and sales
representatives distribute complimentary
coupons for Coca-Cola[1]. Coupons were mailed
to potential customers and placed in
magazines. The company gave soda fountains
free syrup to cover the costs of the free
drinks. It is estimated that between 1894 and
1913 one in nine Americans had received a
free Coca-Cola, for a total of 8,500,000 free
drinks. By 1895 Candler announced to
shareholders that Coca-Cola was served in
every state in the United States.
[edit] History
Coupons first saw widespread use in the
United States in 1909 when C. W. Post
conceived the idea to help sell breakfast
cereals and other products. Today, more than
700 corporations offer coupons for discounts
on products or services. Each year, coupons
generate more than 8 billion dollars in
transactions within the U.S. alone.[2]
There are many different types of online
coupons such as discounts, free shipping,
first-time customer coupons, and free
giveaways.
[edit] Other Uses
In finance, with respect to bonds, a coupon
is the interest rate that the issuer pays to
the bond holders.
In manufacturing and materials science, a
coupon is a small piece of material used for
testing or further processing, compare
billet.
"Football pools" promoters in the United
Kingdom also use this name when referring to
the paper grids which gamblers fill in to bet
on the results of football (soccer) fixtures.
On these, players will mark a number of
crosses (x) against individual game listings
to indicate which they believe will end as a
draw, or tied match. Rewards for correct
forecasting can be of very high monetary
value.
[edit] Internet coupons
Online retailers often refer to Internet
Coupons as "coupon codes," "promotional
codes," "promotion codes," "discount codes,"
"key codes," "promo codes," "shopping codes,"
"voucher codes" or "source codes." Internet
coupons typically provide for reduced cost or
free shipping, a specific dollar or
percentage discount, or some other offer to
encourage consumers to purchase specific
products or to purchase from specific
retailers. Although online coupon sites have
been around for a while, they are now making
a come-back due to the weak economy.
Manufacturers and retailers also consider
Internet Coupons to be those that resemble
traditional "offline" coupons, but can be
printed from a user's computer and redeemed
in-store. Some of these Internet Coupons
employ print-controls and other security
technologies in order to mitigate coupon
fraud risks unique to online channels
(postings to "freebie" sites, unlimited
prints, etc.).
Printable coupons have been both a blessing
to consumers and a curse for retailers. For
several years, printable coupon fraud was
rampant because the technology was behind the
concept and users were savvy about saving
coupon creatives to PDF files. Saving coupon
files to PDF is considered fraudulent use of
coupons and goes against the manufacturer's
intention behind issuing the coupon. These
days, printable coupons are easier and safer
to print, but that doesn't ease the rules for
some retailers who've opted not to accept
them anymore.
Another movement is to see local coupons
brought to users online. This is giving
"small" local businesses better online
exposure to communities across the world.
[edit] Pronunciation
The word is of French origin, pronounced
[kuˈpɔ̃], in Britain and Canada it is
pronounced /ˈkuːpɒn/ "COO-pon". A common
alternate American pronunciation is
/ˈkjuːpɒn/ "CUE-pon".

Payless ShoeSource is a discount footwear
retailer that was founded in 1956 in Topeka,
Kansas. Shaol Pozez and his cousin Louis
Pozez founded and operated Payless Shoes. In
1961, it became a public company as the
Volume Shoe Corporation. In 1979, Volume Shoe
merged with the May Department Stores
Company. In the 1980s, Payless was widely
known in the U.S. for its Pro Wings line of
discount sneakers, which often had Velcro
straps instead of laces. In 1996, Payless
ShoeSource became an independent, publicly
held company. On August 17, 2007, the company
acquired The Stride Rite Corporation, and
changed its name to Collective Brands, Inc.
Today, Payless is the largest specialty
family footwear retailer in the Western
Hemisphere. At the end of the first quarter
2006, the company had a total of 4,602
stores. There are stores in all 50 states, as
well as in Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S.
Virgin Islands, and nine Latin American
countries (Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa
Rica, Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, Ecuador,
Dominican Republic and Trinidad). Payless
ShoeSource also operates locations inside
Shopko stores.
Payless carries brands of footwear such as
Airwalk, Champion, Spalding, American Eagle
(American Eagle is a house brand of Payless
Shoes, not to be confused with American Eagle
Outfitters) and Dunkman, endorsed by
Shaquille O'Neal. They also carry their own
brands of footwear, as well as children's
products portraying popular cartoon
characters. Lastly, they offer accessories
such as socks, belts, backpacks and handbags.
Payless ShoeSource Logo Change
The Payless ShoeSource logo used until
2006.On June 27, 2006, Payless announced that
it was launching a new logo created to
represent a more stylish and contemporary
company. This is the first redesign of the
Payless logo in about 20 years.
The new design (seen above right) has the
letter P in a circle. The old Payless logo
replaced all of the letter O's with circles.
The new design does not do this.
Payless ShoeSource Name Confusion
In states where PayLess Drug Stores operated,
Payless Shoe Source was forced to operate
under the Volume Shoes name. After Rite Aid
bought Thrifty/PayLess, the Volume stores
changed to Payless Shoe Source.

incorporated in Delaware, it is headquartered
in San Diego, California, and is now a
private company held by Texas Pacific Group
and Leonard Green & Partners. Their mascots
are Red Ruff (dog) and Blue Mews (cat), who
both appear on the logo.
As of 2007, PETCO has 900 locations in 49
states and the District of Columbia.
Brian Devine is the Chairman of the Board and
James Myers is the CEO. Bruce Hall retired as

On July 14, 2006, PETCO announced the company
would be acquired by two private equity
groups, Texas Pacific Group and Leonard Green
& Partners at a cost of $1.8 billion.
The PETCO Foundation, since its inception in
1999, has raised in excess of $34 million for
support of more than 3,500 non-profit animal
welfare programs across the nation.
In 2004, PETCO launched the "Think Adoption
First" program, which encourages the adoption
of companion animals as opposed to the
outright purchase of them. The program is to
reflect PETCO's goal of finding a loving and
suitable home for animals.
PETCO runs a natural/holistic food section in
its stores referred to as "It's All Natural".
The line contains a variety of brands of
natural foods that offer no additives or
preservatives, and includes only pure/natural
ingredients to promote the physical
well-being of cats and dogs. The section has
become increasingly popular and profitable in
the last few years, instantiating a similar
trend in other leading pet stores. PETCO
often opens its doors to competitors to visit
and observe/photograph the section to help in
expanding the healthier diet.
Petco carries several lines of pet foods
owned and or endorsed by well known
celebrities. One of their first lines of
natural/organic foods, Natural Balance dog
and cat food is owned and endorsed by Dick
Van Patten. There were several advertisements
in the store in early 2008 along with Halo
Brand pet foods around the same time. Halo

summer of 2008 Petco launched a new line of
pet foods endorsed and co created by Cesar
Millan, made by Castor and Pullox pet foods

that celebrity mogul and multi pet owner
Paris Hilton as well as former model and pet

their line of unique products. Petco had
benefited from this shop in their stores due
to the demands and increase of pet parents
that want natural products for their pets
well being. Petco endorses healthy pets and a
healthy way of living for pets. These
celebrity endorsed foods are found in their
"It's All Natural" food department, located
in most renovated and new Petco stores.
Petco & Animal Rights
PETCO was spotlighted when they were selling
large exotic birds in their shops. They have
now signed an agreement with PETA to end the
sale of large birds. This agreement can be
found at PETCO Agreement.
PetCo Environmental Record
PETCO was recognized with an Environmental
accolade for extended producer responsibility
for the PET industry and awarded a Trophy for
environmental responsibility /
sustainability. The award declared PETCO to
be an excellent example of a voluntary
industry-driven initiative to help solve
waste stream problems, fully meeting the
requirements for a trophy to reward
environmental responsibility and
sustainability. The judges applauded PETCO
for taking on extended producer
responsibility and imposing accountability
over the entire life cycle of PET packaging.
PETCO natural and organic pet foods, and a

General Nutrition Centers or GNC is a
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based American
commercial enterprise focusing on the retail
sale of health and nutrition related
products, over the counter drugs, and
foods/food supplements world-wide through GNC
branded stores.
GNC History
In 1935, David Shakarian opened a small
health food store, Lackzoom, in downtown
Pittsburgh. He only made USD $35 on his first
day, but was able to open a second store
within six months. A year later, Shakarian
suffered what appeared to be a fatal blow
when the Ohio River flooded on St. Patrick's
Day. Both of his stores were wiped out.
However, he quickly rebuilt both stores, and
opened five more by 1941.
During the health food craze of the 1960s,
Shakarian expanded his chain outside
Pittsburgh for the first time, and in the
process changed its name to General Nutrition
Center. He continued to run the chain until
his death in 1984.
GNC Retail stores
GNC retail stores (or "GNCs") will typically
stock a wide range of weight
loss/bodybuilding supplements and nutritional
supplements, in both their own numerous in
house brands as well as third party name
brands, in addition to health and fitness
books, magazines and related tools. The
company also stocks vitamins, natural
remedies, and health and beauty products. GNC
has over 6,000 stores in the US (including
1,100 store-within-a-store locations within
Rite Aid) as well as locations in 49 other
countries.
GNC LiveWell in Australia currently has 41

catch phrases as "oooh," and "sucka."
In September of 2007. His use of subliminal
messaging is amazing, as it actually helps
his sales, much to the chagrin of Gino.
GNC Business model
GNC retail stores are both a combination of
corporate-owned and franchised stores; 1300

Kmart Coupon Code

Kmart (sometimes spelled as "K-Mart") is a
chain of department stores in the United
States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands,
and Guam. The chain merged with Sears in
2005, creating the Sears Holdings
Corporation. Kmart also exists in Australia
and New Zealand (see Kmart Australia),
although it now has no relation to the
American stores except in name after US
equity in the Australian business was
purchased in the late 1970s. It is the third
largest discount store chain in the world,
behind Wal-Mart and Target.
As of January 28, 2006, Kmart operated a
total of 1,416 Kmart stores across 49 states,
Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin
Islands. This store count included 1,361
discount stores, averaging 92,000 square
feet, and 55 Super Centers, averaging 165,000
square feet.[1].
Kmart's world headquarters was located in
Troy, Michigan in a sprawling complex which,
since Kmart's relocation to Illinois, has
been slated for demolition [2].
Kmart became known for its "Blue Light
Specials." They occurred at surprise moments
when a store worker would light up a mobile
police light and offer a discount in a
specific department of the store. The phrase
"attention Kmart shoppers" also entered into
the American pop psyche, as seen in the movie
Rain Man.
Kmart History
Sebastian S. Kresge, who had previously
founded the S. S. Kresge dime store chain,
opened the first Kmart store on March 1, 1962
in Garden City, Michigan[3] and named Kmart
after himself; this store is still in
operation to this day. A total of eighteen
Kmart stores opened that year. Kmart Foods, a
now defunct chain of Kmart supermarkets,
opened in that same decade.
During the 1970s, Kmart put a number of
competing retailers out of business. In 1977,
S. S. Kresge Corporation changed its name to
Kmart Corporation. In 1987, the Kmart
Corporation sold its remaining Kresge and
Jupiter stores in the United States to
McCrory Stores, although Canadian Kresge
stores continued to operate until 1994.
[edit] Changes for Kmart
Logo 1962-1990. It is still used at some
Kmart locations. An updated version of the
logo is still used by Kmart Australia with
the word "mart" rendered in italics. This
logo was also used in Australia which was
used from 1980 to 1991.During the 1980s, the
company's fortunes began to change; many of
Kmart's stores were considered to be outdated
and in decaying condition. In the late 1980s
and into the 1990s, the corporate office
shifted much of its focus from the Kmart
stores to other companies it had acquired or
created, such as The Sports Authority,
Builders Square, and Waldenbooks.
In 1990, in an effort to change their image,
Kmart introduced a new logo (dropping the
old-style italic "K" with a turquoise "mart,"
created 1962), and renovated many stores.
(This logo forms part of the "Big Kmart" logo
pictured below.) However, most stores were
not re-modeled until the mid-1990s, and some
have not been completely renovated to this
day. This logo was replaced in 2004 with the
current logo. In the early 1990s, Kmart also
tried to reinvent itself by using the
short-lived Today's Kmart name.
The company also began to offer exclusive
merchandise by Martha Stewart, Kathy Ireland,
and Jaclyn Smith. Other recognizable brands
included Sesame Street and Disney. Rosie
O'Donnell and Penny Marshall were among the
company's most recognized spokespersons.
[edit] Super Kmart and Big Kmart
Kmart opened its first 147,000-square-foot
(13,700 m2) Super Kmart[4] in 1991 in Medina,
Ohio. The second Super Kmart opened in
Montrose, Ohio, but is now closed. Kmart also
opened the first Big Kmart in Chicago,
Illinois, on April 23, 1997. Some Kmart
stores were converted to the Super Kmart
concept, but most were converted to the Big
Kmart concept, possibly because it was less
reminiscent of Wal-Mart's Supercenter
concept.

[edit] Blue Light Special and 1994 Closures
Kmart's red classic logo (1990-2004).The
original Blue Light Special disappeared in
1991[5], due to changing consumer habits and
misuse by individual stores (according to the
company's official explanation). The company
brought back the Blue Light Special in the
early 2000s, but within a few weeks the
program was scrapped.
In 1994, Kmart closed 110 stores. Unlike its
competitors Wal-Mart and Target, it had
failed to invest in computer technology to
manage its supply chain. Furthermore, Kmart
maintained a high dividend, which reduced the
amount of money available for improving its
stores. Many business analysts also faulted
the corporation for failing to create a
coherent brand image.
