BEIJING 2008: USA NATIONAL BASKETBALL DREAM
TEAM MISSION ACCOMPLISHED GOLD IN OLYMPICS
☆☆☆☆☆
The United States defeated Spain 118-107 to
take the Men's Basketball gold medal at the
Beijing Olympic Games on Sunday.(BEIJING,
August 24) -- The 2006 world champion Spanish
squad brought its best effort to make sure
the "Redeem Team" didn't coast through the
gold medal match, but the United States still
prevailed 118-107 to win back the gold medal
on Sunday, August 24.
"Spain gave us our first test," said United
States guard Deron Williams. Both sides
racked up fouls early on, which seemed to
stunt the defensive patterns of the United
States more than Spain, who effectively
contained the US side and even outscored in
the paint 56-50.
Guard Kobe Bryant admits he got into foul
trouble and had to play more cautious. "But
in the fourth quarter, Coach K (US coach Mike
Krzyzewski) told me to let that momma loose,"
he said, "and that's what I tried to do."
High-scorer Dwayne Wade said even if star
players like Bryant and Lebron James were
held back by personal fouls, Team USA was not
dependant on any one man. "We're very deep,
one through 12," he said. "It's about the
whole team."
"This feels great. We haven't won in eight
years. A lot of people doubted that NBA stars
could play together."
Bryant was playing against his Los Angeles
Lakers teammate Pau Gasol in this game, and
when the buzzer sounded he made sure to give
Gasol a hug. "I love him like a brother. I
truthfully wish we were playing someone else
in the finals."
Spain's Alex Mumbru says his team played 100
percent and had nothing else to give. "This
has been the greatest match of the last
years. Everyone is saying that. It will be a
historical match and we want people to
remember this Spanish team for a long while,"
said Mumbru.
With this win, both teams have players
reaching an historic mark. US captain Jason
Kidd becomes the 13th Men's Basketball player
to win two gold medals, and Spain's
17-year-old guard Ricky Rubio becomes the
youngest player to ever win an Olympic Men's
Basketball medal. Rubio had six points and
six rebounds in Sunday's gold medal game.
In the bronze medal match earlier in the day,
a 20-point haul from Carlos Delfino steered
an Argentina to an 87-75 victory over
Lithuania. Delfino pulled a game-high 10
rebounds and picked up the offensive load for
the defending Olympic champions, who were
minus their inspirational lead Manu Ginobili
due to an ankle injury.
Argentina went into the first break ahead
24-21, but it was a succession of three-point
shots midway through the second by Leonardo
Martin Gutierrez, Alfredo Paolo Quinteros and
Andres Nocioni that proved decisive and gave
the team a 44-31 lead.
Lithuania would never recover from that
moment, the deficit growing to 24 at one
stage in the third. Captain Ramunas
Siskauskas paced his team with 15 points
while guard Rimantas Kaukenas added 14.
Sarunas Jasikevicius, Lithuania's leading
scorer heading into the match, was not his
usual efficient self, hitting just four of 12
shots for just nine points.
For Argentina, Luis Scola tallied 16 points
while Nocioni, battling tendonitis, added 14.
The bronze medal went to Argentina, who
downed Lithuania 87-75.he United States
topped off its undefeated performance in the
2008 Olympic Men's Basketball tournament with
a gold medal win over Spain, 118-107, on

QUOTED FROM MSN "BEIJING - Chinese officials
defended their decision to pass off the voice
of a 7-year-old songbird as that of another
girl at the Olympic opening ceremony, calling
it a simple casting choice. Critics said it
was a step too far in China's obsession with
the perfect Olympic Games.
Beijing organizers of the games faced tough
criticism Wednesday after a whistleblower
revealed that the 9-year-old who performed a
song during the spectacular opening ceremony
was lip-synching to another girl's vocal
track.
Yang Peiyi, a 7-year-old with bright eyes and
a smile made crooked by the stubs of her
first grown-up teeth, was heard by an
audience estimated in the billions during
Friday night's ceremony, singing "Ode to the
Motherland."
But they never saw her face.
Organizers passed the song off as being sung
by Lin Miaoke, another perky schoolgirl who
donned a sparkly red dress and soared on
wires above the 91,000-strong crowd at the
Bird's Nest stadium.
Beijing officials on Wednesday defended the
decision to use both girls, saying the
artistic directors could cast whoever they
saw fit. And they were unapologetic about
keeping the lip-synch a secret.
"There were a number of candidates to sing
that song and at the end of the day the
artistic directors picked the best voice and
the best performer," Beijing organizing
committee spokesman Sun Weide said.
Wang Wei, executive vice president of the
organizing committee, said the job of the
ceremony's directors was "to achieve the most
theatrical effect."
"I don't see there is anything wrong with it
if everybody concerned agrees," he said.
But the world's press ridiculed the move on
front pages from Romania to Australia.
"The counterfeit Games: designed to look good
from every angle," said a headline in The
Times of London. The Daily Telegraph urged
organizers of the 2012 London Games to "bring
some sanity and proportion back to both the
opening ceremony and the games themselves."
In Spain, one newspaper called it "Olympic
karaoke." A commentator for The Age newspaper
in Australia called it "the great Beijing
lip-synch switcheroo" and news on the
incident was headlined "China's wrong child
policy." The Romanian daily 7Plus ran this on
its front page: "Hoax! Made in China."
Baltimore Sun reporter Jill Rosen said the
switch was hardly the first case of
lip-synching, but was "possibly the
cruelest."
New York Magazine called on record executives
to give Peiyi a record deal, saying "She's 7!
She has buckteeth! She is adorable!"
The Chinese leadership consider the Beijing
Olympics a matter of national prestige and
the opening extravaganza, attended by a host
of leaders including President Bush, was
intended to wow the world."

lONDON 2012 CURTAIN RAISER
The Olympic Games have drawn to a close at a
glittering closing ceremony inside Beijing's
Bird's Nest Stadium. Mayor Boris Johnson has
received the Olympic flag to signal the start
of London's reign as Olympic host city and
spark wild celebrations in the capital.
An eight-minute handover presentation,
featuring a red double-decker bus, footballer
David Beckham and musicians Jimmy Page and
Leona Lewis followed.
An estimated 40,000 people celebrated the
handover at a party in London.
Johnson was handed the flag by IOC President,
Jacques Rogge, in front of a 91,000 people at
the Bird's Nest.
The Mayor waved the flag four times, as
directed, before handing it to an usher.
He will bring the flag back to London on
Tuesday and fly it outside City Hall
alongside the Paralympic flag when those
Games have concluded in September.
He will also display the flag at a major
celebration in Beijing tonight for athletes,
organisers, senior politicians including
Prime Minister Gordon Brown, spectators and
the media.
Spectacular fireworks kicked off the
proceedings, while a beautifully
choreographed drumming and dancing display
recalled the opening ceremony.
It was a more celebratory affair, as
exuberant athletes, dancers and musicians got
into the party spirit. The Olympic flag was
handed to London mayor Boris Johnson, with
organisers briefly showcasing the 2012 Games.
The countdown to 2012 has started, and
organisers will know they have a great deal
to live up to with China staging one of the
best organised Games in history and staging
some of the most memorable opening and
closing ceremonies ever seen."The next Summer
Games return to a country which I frequently
boast has either invented or codified just
about every major world sport. "We will draw
on that heritage and we will draw on our wit,
flair, imagination and ingenuity to build on
what we've all witnessed in Beijing and
deliver a fantabulous Olympics in what I
consider to be not only my home, but the home
of sport. "Sport is coming home. See you in
London!" In London, the party in The Mall
outside the Queen's residence, Buckingham
Palace, is set to go on until 1700 BST with a
variety of musical acts. They include McFly,
Will Young, Scouting for Girls and The
Feeling and a flypast by the Royal Air
Force's aerobatics team, the Red Arrows,
entertaining the crowd.
It will also feature British Olympians
including Dame Mary Peters, Roger Black,
Sally Gunnell and Sharron Davies. The
International Olympic Committee awarded the
Games of the 30th Olympiad to London on 6
July, 2005. London won a two-way fight with
Paris by 54 votes to 50 at the IOC meeting in
Singapore, after bids from Moscow, New York
and Madrid were eliminated. Mayor Johnson has
told the BBC he is "absolutely determined"
the 2012 Olympics will cost less than the
current £9.3bn budget. London will become
the first city to stage the Olympics for a
third time in 2012. On both previous
occasions the capital has staged the Games at
short notice - Rome pulled out of hosting the
1908 Olympics following the eruption of Mount
Vesuvius in 1906.
And in 1948, London staged the Austerity
Games following World War Tags : london olympics beijing closing ceremony takes over as host video david beckham usa china russia great britain 2012 jackie chan film star curtain raiser from beiging opening ceremy singing scandal fake gold medal yang peiyi Lin Miaoke 2008 lip syncing sync |
