When I was 13, my friends Dad was given 2
free tickets for the 1972 NME poll-winners
'Rock At The Oval' one-day music fest at the
London cricket ground. So off we 2 innocent
lads went & squeezed down to the front,
surrounded by freaks, utter nutters,
odd-smelling smoke & semi-naked laydees. In
those days PA speaker stacks were frickin
huge, with bass-bins big enough to live in!.
At noon, the compere kicked off the
proceedings by spinning a few records, and
this, Burlesque, was on first. I will never
forget the sheer force upon my ribs & ears of
this track played at 20,000 watts!...having
only listened to a 4 watt Dansette before...
(Also appearing that day was Genesis, Jack
Bruce, Focus, Wishbone Ash, Emerson Lake &
Palmer & Argent)
