The Plaza never fulfilled its creators
intention as the palace of the north but
eventually became a ruinous blemish on the
landscape. Original architects John Norton
and Philip Massey of London. Built in 1877 -
1878 cost £82000. Original design consisted
of two towers and three floors and glass roof
dome. Top floor, glazed roof with winter
gardens. Second floor marine aquarium.
Basement gave access to the sands. Schemes
have included the Palace Theatre 1920s. The
Galaland Ballroom 1933. Night club and
restaurant with the roller-skating becoming a
skateboard arena 1970s. Part of the building
was occupied as an amusement arcade. 10
