| High Security Falun Gong Trial in China |

ANCHOR: 

Three Shanghai Falun Gong practitioners were
illegally taken to Shanghai Xuhui District
Court for trial by the Chinese Communist
Party on October 21st. One brave lawyer has
come out on their behalf and is acting as
their defense lawyer, a first in Shanghai
since the state crackdown on the innocent
practice began in 1999. We have an exclusive
interview with Mr. Li on the case.
STORY:

The three Falun Gong practitioners, Peng
Liu, Xumei Zhang and Yan Guo, were taken by
police earlier this year while out promoting
NTDTVs Chinese New Year Spectacular, giving
out information on the book the Nine
Commentaries on the Communist Party, and
telling people how Chinese were quitting the
communist party.
In NTD's exclusive phone interview with their
defense lawyer from Beijing Mr. Li said that
in court he made his view very clear.
[Mr. Li, Lawyer]:(quote1, male)
The Chinese
authorities regard Falun Gong to be harmful
to society. This is like treating white sugar
as arsenic. So this point of view itself is
wrong. All around the world Falun Gong is
allowed to practice, its practiced in more
than 80 countries. Only in China, theyre not
allowed. Since other countries can accept
it... it shows that theres something wrong
with the Chinese Communist Partys values.
Mr. Li also says that the laws in China
suppress free beliefs. Even though the
practitioners havent done anything harmful in
society, theyre still treated like criminals.

"It (the
Chinese Communist Party) is specifically
targeting these type of people. It suppresses
them and doesnt want them to believe in one
thing together. The Supreme Court and the
Prosecutors Office judge them according to
their behavior instead of the result. So if
they behave in a way that does not harm
society, they are still treated like
criminals."

| Falun Gong Arrested in Olympic Run Up |

With one month to go before the Olympic
Games' opening ceremony, Chinese security
agencies continue to arrest Falun Gong
adherents throughout China in large numbers.
In Beijing alone, hundreds have been arrested
and dozens sentenced to labor camps--without
trial.
According to the Falun Dafa Information
Center, or FDI, the Chinese regime continues
to arrest and torture adherents of Falun
Gong, also called Falun Dafa. FDI says the
persecution of this spiritual group has
gotten worse—not better—since China was
awarded the Olympics.
In Beijing alone, there have been at least
208 arrests since last December. FDI has
verified 30 of them sentenced without trial
to so-called "re-education through labor"
camps.
FDI spokesman Erping Zhang published this
statement:
'This quote should be read by narrator, and
also put on screen. There's no video
interview.'
[Erping Zhang, Falun Dafa Information
Center]:
"These arrests are not about ensuring a
'harmonious Olympics' as Party officials
claim. Falun Gong adherents pose no threat
whatsoever to the games. The Olympics are
being taken as an excuse to put them behind
bars for years."
Among those being held without trial in
Beijing are Mr. Niu Jinping and his wife. Two
years ago, Mr. Niu had met with a top-level
European politician on his visit to Beijing.
Niu provided European Parliament Vice
President Edward McMillan-Scott with evidence
of the Chinese regime's persecution of Falun
Gong. Eyewitnesses told FDI that on April 20
this year, Niu was beaten and arrested by
plainclothes policemen who confiscated items
from his home. Niu lives in Beijing's
Chaoyang district, home to the new Bird's
Nest Olympic stadium.
The Falun Dafa Information Center says that
in total, more than 8,000 Falun Gong
adherents have been arrested since last
December. That's roughly equivalent to the
number of athletes that will compete in the
Olympics Games this summer.
