St. Thomas Aquinas
CONFESSOR, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Feast: January 28
The great outlines and all the important
events of his life are known, but biographers
differ as to some details and dates. Death
prevented Henry Denifle from executing his
project of writing a critical life of the
saint. Denifle's friend and pupil, Dominic
Prummer, O.P., professor of theology in the
University of Fribourg, Switzerland, has
taken up the work and is publishing the
"Fontes Vitae S. Thomae Aquinatis, notis
historicis et criticis illustrati"; and the
first fascicle (Toulouse, 1911) has appeared,
giving the life of St. Thomas by Peter Calo
(1300) now published for the first time. From
Tolomeo of Lucca . . . we learn that at the
time of the saint's death there was a doubt
about his exact age (Prummer, op. cit., 45).
The end of 1225 is usually assigned as the
time of his birth. Father Prummer, on the
authority of Calo, thinks 1227 is the more
probable date (op. cit., 28). All agree that
he died in 1274.
Landulph, his father, was Count of Aquino,
Theodora, his mother, Countess of Teano. His
family was related to the Emperors Henry VI
and Frederick II, and to the Kings of Aragon,
Castile, and France. Calo relates that a holy
hermit foretold his career, saying to
Theodora before his birth: "He will enter the
Order of Friars Preachers, and so great will
be his learning and sanctity that in his day
no one will be found to equal him" (Prummer,
op. cit., 18). At the age of five, according
to the custom of the times, he was sent to
receive his first training from the
Benedictine monks of Monte Cassino. Diligent
in study, he was thus early noted as being
meditative and devoted to prayer, and his
preceptor was surprised at hearing the child
ask frequently: "What is God?" About the year
1236 he was sent to the University of Naples.
Calo says that the change was made at the
instance of the Abbot of Monte Cassino, who
wrote to Thomas's father that a boy of such
talents should not be left in obscurity
(Prummer, op. cit., 20). At Naples his
preceptors were Pietro Martini and Petrus
Hibernus. The chronicler says that he soon
surpassed Martini a grammar, and he was then
given over to Peter of Ireland, who trained
him in logic and the natural sciences. The
customs of the times divided the liberal arts
into two courses: the Trivium, embracing
grammar, logic, and rhetoric; the Quadrivium,
comprising music, mathematics, geometry, and
astronomy . . . . Thomas could repeat the
lessons with more depth and lucidity than his
masters displayed. The youth's heart had
remained pure amidst the corruption with
which he was surrounded, and he resolved to
embrace the religious life.
Some time between 1240 and August, 1243, he
received the habit of the Order of St.
Dominic, being attracted and directed by John
of St. Julian, a noted preacher of the
convent of Naples. The city wondered that
such a noble young man should don the garb of
poor friar. His mother, with mingled feelings
of joy and sorrow, hastened to Naples to see
her son. The Dominicans, fearing she would
take him away, sent him to Rome, his ultimate
destination being Paris or Cologne. At the
instance of Theodora, Thomas's brothers, who
were soldiers under the Emperor Frederick,
captured the novice near the town of
Aquapendente and confined him in the fortress
of San Giovanni at Rocca Secca. Here he was
detained nearly two years, his parents,
brothers, and Sisters endeavouring by various
means to destroy his vocation. The brothers
even laid snares for his virtue, but the
pure-minded novice drove the temptress from
his room with a brand which he snatched from
the fire. Towards the end of his life, St.
Thomas confided to his faithful friend and
companion, Reginald of Piperno, the secret of
a remarkable favour received at this time.
When the temptress had been driven from his
chamber, he knelt and most earnestly implored
God to grant him integrity of mind and body.
He fell into a gentle sleep, and, as he
slept, two angels appeared to assure him that
his prayer had been heard. They then girded
him about with a white girdle, saying: "We
gird thee with the girdle of perpetual
virginity." And from that day forward he
never experienced the slightest motions of
concupiscence.

Perry talks in Israel with his tour group. He
is at Mount Carmel which is the same spot
where Elijah called down the fire and the
rain. This deals specifically with the
church's in North America. There are two
things missing in the church. He shows us
today how you break a drought in the
spiritual realm. He tells us about the time
Elijah called a drought or a famine to hit
the land. Then he also talks about when
Elijah showed the false prophets of Baal the
burning of the sacrifice. Then he talks about
how the church can become spiritually dry
which can cause self inflicted sickness. He
talks how Elijah prayed 7 times before he
prophesied the rain coming. He relates that
to the church and prophetic people. Next
Perry us the pattern of the bible In
producing spiritual rain. He tells us why
praise is important. He tells us that prayers
will produce rain in the spirit. Perry Stone
also says we shouldn't be in a hurry to leave
the presence of God. Finally he tells us 3
things that Elijah did that we need to do. We
can be a drought maker and an end time rain
maker.
Two Things missing In The Church
1. The Fire -- The passion of the Lord --
Causes you to want to live right -- Causes
you to want to go out and witness
2. The Rain -- Fresh outpouring of the Holy
Spirit -- Encourages people and refreshes
them on a consistent bases
Elijah -- Great Prophet of God -- One of the
greatest prophets in the entirety of the
bible
Malachi 4:5 -- 5 Behold, I will send you
Elijah the prophet before the coming of the
great and dreadful day of the Lord -- Elijah
will return at the end of days -- Will come
back as a witness recorded in Revelation
Two Witnesses -- Revelation 11:3-4 -- 42
months will minister in the nation of Israel
-- Convert full Jewish men to the message of
the Messiah who is Jesus Christ
Elijah -- 1 Kings 17:1 -- Stood before a
wicked king -- Their will be no rain these
years according to my word -- Went into a 42
month drought -- Elijah came after 42 months
and said it is time to break the drought --
Came onto mount Carmel and challenged the
false prophets of Baal
1 Kings 18:19-39 - 19 Now therefore send, and
gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel,
and the prophets of Baal four hundred and
fifty, and the prophets of the groves four
hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.
1 Kings 17:1 - 1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who
was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto
Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth,
before whom I stand, there shall not be dew
nor rain these years, but according to my
word.
Baal prophets built an altar -- Tried to call
the fire down but nothing happened
Elijah Called the fire down -- Dug a trench
around the altar -- poured water on the
sacrifice -- Made it more difficult for God
to show his power -
Some believe that Prophets of Baal had
chambers and there was a tunnel underneath
the ground so they could make the fire come
from under the earth -- It would look like
the fire had come supernaturally -- Elijah
was showing there is noone hiding under
ground -- The fire is coming down from heaven
In order to break a famine (Drought) - When a
famine comes and it is extreme people begin
to eat things they would normally no eat -- 2
Kings 6:25 -- Ate donkeys head and doves dung
-- Drought in a Church -- They would even eat
each other -- 2 Kings 6:29 -- A woman who ate
her son
Drought in a Church -- Spiritually dry --
people start eating people -- Galatians 5:15
-- Why do you bite and devour one another --
To gossip and to use your mouth in a negative
way towards other people that are in the body
of Christ -- New Testament -- Paul Rebuked
people for biting and devouring one another
1. Confusion -- Spirit of Gossip or Spirit of
Criticism -- Dryness of the Holy Spirit
What happens when you start eating each other
-- Exodus 16:11-35 -- Eating of the Manna --
Supernaturally sustained them -- Numbers
11:4-33 -- Unhappy with the Manna -- Wanted
flesh to eat -- God sent great wind -- Quail
dropped at their feet -- 30 Days the ate
flesh -- So much that they became sick --
Cant eat people and be healthy -
Cleveland Tennessee -- Many Many

gossip/Criticism -- When Israel ate that much
flesh it made them sick -- Flesh was not what
they are supposed to eat
1 Corinthians 11:23-32 -- If we eat the body

We will have life I us -- But if we do it
unworthily -- It can bring damnation to us --
Weak Sickly among us and many sleep -- At
times there are self afflicted things that
can happen to the church -- We are not
properly eating the word of God -- We are not
eating the heavenly manna the God is sending

The governor of the area was a former
Catholic turned Mason who was very set
against the Church. On August 13th he offered
to take the children to the apparition site
in his carriage. Once they got inside he
kidnapped them. He locked them in a room of
his house. The next day he took them to the
Town Hall. The children were questioned. He
was especially interested in the "secret"
which the Lady told them. The children would
not tell him. Finding that he was getting
nowhere he threw them in jail. After they
spent a short time in the jail he questioned
them again. At one point the governor
threatened to throw them in boiling oil. Even
this failed. He kept them locked up overnight
at his house. The next day he questioned them
again. Finally, seeing that his efforts were
useless, he released them.
On August 19th the Lady appeared to the
children in a different place. She said, "I
want you to continue to go to Cova da Iria on
the thirteenth day and to continue to recite
the Rosary every day. In the last month
[October] I will perform the miracle so that
all shall believe. . . Pray, pray a great
deal, and make sacrifices for sinners, for
many souls go to Hell because they have no
one to sacrifice and pray for them." Lucia
asked the Lady what to do with the money that
the crowd had left at the Cova da Iria. She
said some should be used for a procession on
the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and the
rest should go for the support of the chapel
which the people would build.
On September 13th the crowd had grown so much
that the children could barely make their way
to the apparition site. That day Our Lady
said, "Continue to say the Rosary to bring
about the end of the War. In October Our Lord
will come also, and Our Lady of Sorrows and
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Saint Joseph
with the Child Jesus, to bless the world. .
."
October 13th was a very rainy day. Yet this
did not keep believers and non-believers from
coming to witness the miracle the Lady had
promised. Some estimated the crowd at around
70,000. The Lady came at noon and Lucia asked
Her, "What do You want of me?" She responded,
"I want to tell you to have them build a
Chapel here in My honor. I am the Lady of the
Rosary. Let them continue to say the Rosary
every day. The war is going to end, and the
soldiers will soon return to their homes."
Lucia asked Our Lady if She would grant some
requests given to her by the people. Our Lady
said, "Some yes, others no. It is necessary
that they amend their lives and ask pardon
for their sins. Let them offend Our Lord God
no more, for He is already much offended." As
Our Lady ascended from their sight She opened
Her Hands and pointed toward the sun. The
children then saw in the sky three tableau of
the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries
of the Rosary. Then the Holy Family appeared.
St. Joseph and the Infant Jesus blessed the
crowd three times. Next only Lucia saw Our
Lady of Sorrows beside Her Suffering Son Who
also blessed the crowd. Finally the children
saw Our Lady of Mount Carmel with the Infant
Jesus upon Her knee.
